Somaliland is not Somalia. Somalia is known for its protracted civil war as different groups vie for power. By contrast, Somaliland had a peaceful transition of power to an opposition party after a parliamentary election in 2010. Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, is the safest city I have seen – far more than any equivalent sized city in Australia, Asia and Europe.
Despite having its own flag, currency, parliament, police and military force, Somaliland’s self-declared nation status is yet to be internationally recognised. A sad situation since the Somalilanders are the proudest people I have ever met.
